 Canine Competitive Aggression
in Multi-Dog Household

"My name is Krist Martin and I am a dog trainer. Recently, I went through a rough patch with four of my dogs. There was lots of tension in the house and small bouts of aggressive behavior which led to one of my dogs having his faced stitched up at the veterinary practice where I work.  I love my dogs very much and as a dog trainer knew what I should do but just couldn't bring myself to do it."
"I sought help on an online dog training listserve and Karen immediately extended herself to me and gave me her phone number so I could contact her offline. I am so glad that she did. Karen listened to me and reinforced my ideas and also gave me a lot of things to think about. Within a few short days I was able to make small changes that ended up reducing the amount of aggression I was seeing. Karen contacted me about a week later to check in. I was happy to let her know how well things had been going.  Since that time I have been able to seek advice from Karen regarding some of my own clients who are dealing with issues that I don't have as much experience with. Karen has become an invaluable resource for me and has given me new insight into dealing with dogs and their owners.  If you are looking for someone who will put their all into helping you and your dog then you can't go wrong with Karen. She is a real pleasure to work with."

 Puppy Training (mouthy Rottweiler)

...."I wanted to thank you for everything...everywhere we go with Chloe, or when she meets new people all we hear is how wonderful and friendly she is, and I have you to thank. She totally loves other dogs. I'm never afraid to bring her anywhere. She's just a big lovable mush. We just absolutely love her. Thank you again. I can't imagine what I would have done without you!"

 Canine Body Language Seminar

"I can't thank you enough on behalf of Mayor Joseph DeIorio and all the participants of Pet Appreciation Day for donating your time to give a very informative presentation on canine aggressive behavior on Sunday, October 25, 2009, and staying to answer questions. Your presentation was a great way to finish up our afternoon of "pet Festivities" and I appreciate that you rushed from your class for us."
"Thank you also for your lovely e-mail, but without your help the day would not have been such a great success! I do look forward to working with you again on future animal endeavors."

Over-Exuberant Yorkie-Poo
(would not let owner sleep)

"We really enjoyed the session with you! I feel that Louie really understood why you had come and his behavior is much better already! I slept until 10 today because of the Kong idea! He sits and dances. It's been a great 2 days! I enjoyed your advice and I'm sure you will continue to hear from me! I'm truly a huge fan! Again, thank you for everything."

  Fearful Australian Shepherd (hiding)

"I just wanted to take some time to say thanks for all the wonderful help you gave me to train Lacie. As you know, we rescued her from North Shore Animal League after losing our Shepherd mix Lizzy, and Lacie was quite a challenge."
"She came to us quite frightened of just about everything from noise to people, to just going outside. Thank God I found you on the NJ Forum website and you were so kind when I called and you spent so much time talking with me about Lacie even before we met. I can't tell you how much that phone call put me at ease because I was at my wits end with Lacie, but you gave me hope!"
"I had never had experience with a rescue dog before as challenging as Lacie and you helped me by explaining several reasons for her behavior. Your skills and knowledge concerning her behavior helped me tremendously to have more patience with her."
"I am now able to take her for longer walks, and enjoy spending playful times with her. She is gradually losing some of ther fears and I can tell she is really trying to get over them. She's a better-adjusted dog since you came into our lives and helped me to understand her fears and needs. You helped me be a better mommy to her!"
"Thanks, Karen, for your dedication, love and concern for the dogs of the world and especially for all you did for Lacie and me!"

 Fear of Strangers
(growling, barking, chasing)
"Karen, thank you so much for following up with me on Saturday and today. I have been thinking about the scenarios you have given me often. The one with the spider in the hand that starts to creep up the arm (to explain panic) really made an impression in my mind. I also have been thinking about telling people I am rehabilitating Duke as opposed to me being an owner who doesn't know what the heck I'm doing.  I feel if I become a little more assertive (with people) I can protect him from feeling like the spider is crawling up his arm.
I can't believe I cried when you hugged me. I think I would have cried a river if there was nobody else around. I have been under a lot of stress lately with the loss of my dad and also with Duke. I felt like you understood and I was finally getting the help I needed. You are an amazing person with a wonderful gift  that can read the need of others...canine and human.
I have skimmed the materiel you have given me and plan to read them fully over the next couple of days. I am feeling hopeful. That doesn't mean you won't hear from me because I know this is going to take some time. Until then thank you again for taking so much time with us. I feel like you truly understand Duke and can help us when we need it."

Dog-on-Dog Aggression
Rescued Female Cocker Spaniel

(under-socialized, play deficit)
Karen, I just wanted to repeat what I said to you before you left. I am really delighted at what happened. This totally exceeded my expectations. You are showing me some of the keys to unlock the mystery of my dog. I absolutely think that desensitizing her to other dogs in a one on one or two situation the way we did today with your company's stress-therapy dogs is the way to go. Especially with dogs who are more demure and laid back so she can learn how to play.  I am so excited to see what we can do next time. Thanks so much. Please let Ruben know my comments.
